March 26th Soup's On!

Seeing as I had much soup left over from last week I didn't have to make so much soup this week! In addition to the Carrot, Dutch Vegetable, and Chicken Rice Vegetable I made some Broccoli with Parmesan and Vegan Cabbage Vegetable.

There were 26 bowls of soup bought today with $3 made in donations.

It was a mild and sun filled day. I am thinking that the numbers may go down as we get closer to the end of April. I will see where GOD leads me, otherwise this venture will be finished at the end of April. God willing (and if I don't need to get a full-time job!) I will bring it back around the end of September.

Renzo's Birthday & Easter Wednesday!

It was a fun day at DCC! We celebrated Renzo's birthday with me making him carrot soup with nutmeg and honey, Chrissy brought her mom and made mini cakes, Nonni, Una and I sang for him, Dorothy bought him soup and Chrissy bought him a chair because he is moving into his own apartment! WHOOT! What fun!

Today was also the Easter dinner for the seniors so our numbers were down.

Two new people came who saw the ad in the Dundas Star News!

Besides the (vegan/gluten free) carrot soup I made for Renzo, I also made chicken/rice/vegetable. Nonni cooked up some chili that went over very nicely and donated it. Rie made Dutch vegetable soup with meatballs and donated it. I am ever so greatful! :)

Three under poverty level people came today and 20 soups were bought plus $5.25 was donated.

March Break "Soup's On!" and Tragedy

I was relieved of many duties today! Chrissy and three of her youth from her youth group came out to help at Soup's On!, which was a blessing. Thank you to all of you! I only needed to make one extra soup because I was able to freeze the soups from the previous week!

We had 23 soups bought and 6 under poverty level people out. $48.50 was made - $2.50 in donations. The four soups were: Tomato Rice, Chicken Noodle, Cauliflour with Celery and Garlic.

In addition to making sure everything was set up (thank you, Renzo, for your help!) and running smoothly, I was also trying to assist a lady who's house burnt down on Tuesday morning. Her, her partner and her three children made it out safely with the clothes on their backs. I was able to start them with some clothing and coats for two of them. I have been donated some furniture and other household items that I will be picking up for them once they have their "government" housing on April 1st.

Today, Saturday, March 15th, I am going to find them more clothing if they need it. I have several bags of clothing here which I will be sorting out, as well as dealing with registration for the Spring Session of my dance classes. Anyone have some free time to do some sorting? ;)

Budget of $10,000.00

Soup's On! (and other lunch programs) $2,600 desired and raised!

Coffee Break/Bible Study $1,300 desired, $561.09 raised(by Soup's On & donations raised)

Consignment Shop with clothing distribution for the homeless $6,100.00 desired

Total raised as of April 30th, 2008: $3,161.09

Budget Explanation

Soup Kitchen: hoping for minimal cost due to donations (soup, ingredients and location).

Coffee Break/Bible Study: hoping for bible donations. Minimal cost for snacks, coffee, tea and water to serve to the homeless.

Consignment Store: with basement or back room for giving out clothing to the homeless. Rent in Dundas can be expensive and is calculated in different ways for different buildings, as well as BIA taxes in some areas.

Shelter: If we have to buy a place it will be extremeley expensive. Heat, hydro, taxes, BIA fees, square footage fees and a morgage!

The one thing about running programs out of the Dundas Salvation Army location on John Street is there isn't a cost per hour. Possibly the same at the Dundas Community Centre as long as my bosses are here!

Slow After The Storm

We had a nice bit of snow on Tuesday night... Unfortunate because it slowed down the traffic for Soup's On.

In any event, there were 10 new people who had soup, one senior and 5 under poverty level people, which was better than none at all!

The soups we had were: (by me) roasted garlic soup and green pea soup(vegan, no gluten), tomato rice, cauliflour with celery, and (by Una) Curried Squash.

Una, Liesl and three of her children volunteered. This week $25.88 was made on the venuture.

I'm hoping for much better news next week!

City SideLines and March Break

Yesterday, Friday, February 29th, the following was in the CitySidelines of the Dundas Star Journal:

SOUP''S ON At the Dundas Community Centre on Wednesdays, 11:30 am to 1 pm for a bowl of soup and a bun for $2. Proceeds go towards homeless initiatives in Dundas. Email dccdancing@yahoo.ca or call Cassandra at 905-627-8743.

Today I confirmed that Youth Pastor Chrissy Morrison and some of her youth will be volunteering on Wednesday, March 12th at Soup's On!

The First Wednesday Soup Kitchen

Today I had two volunteers to help me with the soup kitchen! I''m getting much better at asking for help, which is a good thing! Going from the cash box, we had 36 seniors come in and enjoy the soup. Only 2 under poverty level people came in to have soup today. I made cauliflour celery soup, beef potato soup with wine and chicken rice vegetable. The donations and money raised from selling the soup totalled $101.00! We hope for more people next week! I also advertised it in the Dundas Star News.

Soup Kitchen Wednesdays

On Tuesday, February 19th I approached my bosses at the Dundas Community Centre to get approval to hold the soup kitchens at DCC on Wednesdays. Both of them were very supportive. We had previously discussed holding lunches and dinners for the seniors so those who weren’t feeding themselves properly would get a good meal. My co-worker, Nonni and I have already implemented having a dinner every few months. Holding the Soup Kitchen on Wednesdays allows us to entice the seniors who are already coming out for bridge/bingo/euchre which starts at 1:30 pm.

Starting Wednesday, February 27th the Soup Kitchen will be held in the Community Room at DCC being open to the homeless/under poverty level as well as anyone who would like to purchase a bowl of soup and a bun for $2! Monetary and soup donations will always be appreciated! I hope that this new idea will serve three purposes: feeding the homeless/under poverty level, giving the seniors a good lunch, and raising money for future soup kitchens and homeless programs!

Family Day Soup Kitchen at DCC

With the assistance of a friend, and the generous donation of Squash Apple Soup, the soup kitchen was held yesterday at the Community Centre. The seniors were told about the soup being sold to them to raise money for my initiatives and 11 bowls of soup were sold on top of the 9 people who attended the kitchen! WHOOOT!

I will now be changing the day of the kitchen to Wednesdays as I have missed 3 lessons which help me with my dance instruction. Due to the high response from the seniors, I have decided to ask my bosses if I can run the soup kitchen out of the Community Room at DCC so that I can have the seniors who come to play bingo/bridge/euchre on Wednesdays at 1:30 pm! If we have even a small portion of the players come out, there would be a decent amount of fundraising done! :)

The soups made were potato garlic, chicken vegetable rice and squash apple.

February Changes

On Tuesday, February 12th I made mashed potato soup and Dutch vegetable soup. I announced that I would be changing the day for the soup kitchen to Wednesdays. One person of the 8 that showed up (4 new people) said they wouldn''t be able to make it on Wednesdays, so I said that the week of the 17th the soup kitchen would be on Monday (Family Day).

Unfortunately I cannot make Mondays a regular day, so I will be committing myself to Wednesdays. This will benefit me professionally as I have a conflict with the timing if people stay and socialize, which is what I want them to do!

When I commented about the soup kitchen being held at the community centre to my co-worker, Lynne, she suggested I make lots of soup and sell it to the seniors (and staff who would be there) for $2 a bowl (plus a bun or bagel). I thought this would be an awesome way to raise some more money from something I already do!!! Thinking about this more, if selling the soup goes over well with the seniors on Monday, maybe I will ask if I can move the soup kitchen over to the community centre so that I can hit the large crowd that comes in for bingo/euchre/bridge and continue using this as a fundraising initiative! It would also give some of the single seniors a way to get some good food into their tummies. Hmmm! :)

January 2008

On Saturday, January 5th I started the Coffee Break. No one showed up, but I had time to go through donations. I didn''t expect many people as it is a new program and the word needs to get out.

On Tuesday, January 8th I had the first soup kitchen. One person was advised to come in who came to the Food Bank. I made Potato Soup.

The next two Saturdays didn''t have anyone show up, so I have put the Saturday program on hold until I can get some input from people who are coming to the Soup Kitchen.

Tuesday, January 15 no one showed up for soup.

Tuesday, January 22nd I finally had someone show up who had seen the flyer!!! I asked him to come out again. I had chicken rice soup.

Tuesday, January 29th I had 8 people come out!!! It was very busy and exciting for me. They had only seen the flyer the week previous, so didn''t know about it. They thought it was a really nice idea and were looking forward to coming again. I talked to them about the Saturday program, and they seemed interested! A suggestion was to make it a little later in the morning/early afternoon. I made cabbage soup.

Tuesday, February 5th, Pancake Tuesday, I offered Chicken Rice soup as well as pancakes! Only 4 people showed up - 3 of them from the previous week. I talked to them about the Saturdays a bit more, and I also asked if they would be interested in having an open bible study and they were!

My Inititiatives

Cassandra Wallace is volunteering, with the support of the Dundas Salvation Army, to raise awareness, funds and run programs that will benefit the Homeless of Dundas. Did you know there are approximately 75 homeless in the Dundas area?

In January 2008, I started a "Soup Kitchen" on Tuesdays from 11:30 am to 1 pm and a "Coffee Break" program on Saturdays from 10 to noon. Due to commitments and re-thinking, I changed Soup's On! to Wednesdays at the Dundas Community Centre. Taking advantage of the Dundas Senior Club coming in to play bingo, bridge and echure, I put the word out that I would sell bowls of soup and a bun for $2. This seems to be a hit! Due to numbers and only under poverty level people coming in, I put the "Coffee Break" program on hold.

I am still waiting for the appropriate location for the clothing distribution centre and consignment store.

The main objectives and goals once we get through this next hurdle is:1) to get the word out to the homeless of Dundas about Soup's On! and other possible programs. 2) to start a shelter for the homeless of Dundas. 3) to start any other programs that would be encouraging, supportive and benefitial to the homeless in Dundas. 4) to allow the homeless of Dundas the tools, love, inspiration and motivation to regain charge of their lives and change their situation.
